Water jet fabrication is one of the most exciting technologies on the commercial market today. It allows for stunning precision in cutting, and it works with a wide range of materials. Best of all — it saves you money.

Water jet cutting has quickly emerged as one of the most reliable and cost-effective choices in commercial fabrication. This page will help you understand why.

Additionally, we’re pleased to make water jet fabrication available as a stand-alone service for your various industrial or residential needs.

If you’re looking for precision cutting in Hickory or anywhere in the greater NC Piedmont region, you can count on the first-class water jet service at Wallace Sheet Metal and Roofing Co., Inc.

What Is a Water Jet?

Water jets aren’t just practical and cost-effective — they’re also very cool. Few technologies elicit the “wow” factor that the water jet is known for. The process is a marvel in itself, but the finished product is always a wonder to behold — to know that the end result was chiseled with water alone.

A water jet cutter (sometimes called a waterjet, abrasive jet, or water fabricator) is an industrial tool that cuts into hard materials like stone or metal by creating an extremely high-pressure stream of water. For harder materials, an abrasive substance is integrated with the water in the stream.

By using sophisticated computer software, we are able to map the precise coordinates by which the water makes its cuts. The map then directs the jet’s movement, achieving incredibly precise adjustments in the stream as it goes.

Watch a water jet at work. The technology seen here is similar to the Flow water jet cutter that we use for our own precision cutting in Hickory.

The technology first emerged in the 1930s, when paper manufacturers discovered that concentrated water streams could effectively cut through reams of tough paper. By the 1950s, the streams were powerful enough to impact metal alloys. It wasn’t until the computer age, though, that manufacturers were able to achieve adequate control over the jets’ movements.

Flow Industries emerged as an early leader in water jet cutter technology, spearheading the computerized motion control systems that allow us to maneuver the water jet in any way that we need.

Flow is still the leading maker of water jet machines today, and Wallace Sheet Metal & Roofing is proud to use a top-of-the-line Flow water jet in our state-of-the-art fabrication shop.

As a longtime leader in sheet metal for Hickory, we were naturally interested in the ways that water jet technology could enhance our metal fabrication services. Accordingly, we made early advances in metal fabrication for the Hickory area, and we continue to expand on that today.

Among our water jet metal fabrication services are:

  • Welding: Mig, Tig, Heli-Arc, Solder, and Brazing
  • Copper fabrication
  • Stainless and aluminum steel fabrication
  • Custom brake metal for flashing or trim work

Water Jets and Commercial Roofing

For more than fifty years, Wallace Roofing has stood alone as the leading provider of commercial and industrial roofing in Hickory. It’s no surprise, then, that we immediately looked for ways to incorporate this exciting technology in our roofing services — something no other roofing provider in the region offers.

We’re able to use our Flow Water Jet Cutting System with all types of roofing, including:

  • EPDM rubber roofing
  • Built-up roofing
